Our Commitment to Raising South Africa's Maths Pass Rate

The Mathematics pass rate in South Africa's National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams – better known as "matric" – measures the percentage of candidates who scored at least 30% (the minimum to pass) in pure Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy).

For the Class of 2025 results, released in January 2026:

The pure Mathematics pass rate stood at 64% – a concerning drop from 69% in 2024.

Just 34% (or about 34.1% in some reports) of matric candidates even chose to take pure Mathematics, with the majority opting for Mathematical Literacy instead.

These numbers highlight a persistent national challenge: gateway subjects like pure Maths are essential for STEM fields, university access in high-demand programs, and future careers in engineering, technology, science, and more. Yet weak foundations in earlier grades continue to limit participation and success.

At Maths Educational Toys Africa (META), we are deeply committed to turning this around. We partner with schools, educators, and organisations across South Africa to build a rock-solid foundation in mathematics – starting right where it matters most: the intermediate phase (Grades 4–9), with strong roots often laid even earlier.

The truth is, success in matric pure Mathematics isn't built in Grade 12 – it's constructed year by year from the early and intermediate phases. Poor conceptual understanding in basics like number sense, operations, patterns, algebra readiness, geometry, and problem-solving creates barriers that become overwhelming later on.

That's why META focuses on hands-on, engaging tools: manipulatives, educational games, and toys that make abstract ideas concrete, fun, and accessible. Through interactive play and practical learning, learners develop deeper understanding, boost confidence, improve mental maths skills, and learn to communicate mathematically – all while enjoying the process and shifting attitudes from "Maths is hard" to "Maths is fun!"

By collaborating with schools and community organisations, we're helping bridge resource gaps, especially in areas like Mpumalanga and beyond, to ensure every child gets the strong start they deserve.
