Definition of fractions and decimals

Fractions refers to a part of a whole that is broken down into equal pieces of the same size. It describes how many parts of a certain size there are in an object or entities.

A fraction expression is denoted by using a "/" sign, which is written as a horizontal bar known as the fraction bar that separates the numerator and the denominator. The top number on an expression which is known as the numerator indicates the number of shaded parts of a whole whereas a bottom number which is known as the denominator indicates the total number of parts

Fraction can be reduced to its simplest form; to simplify we divide the numerator and the denominator by the greatest common factor.

Decimals are numbers that consists of a whole and the fractional part. Decimals are denoted by using a (.) sign, to separate the whole number part from its fractional part. Decimals are used to represent more precise values of measurable quantities like length, weight, distance and money. They can be used to represent ratios, divisions and percentage.
