DEFINITION OF FACTORS AND MULTIPLES

Factors are the numbers that are multiplied together to reach a certain number. Understanding multiplication and division facts (inverse operations) helps with grasping the concept of factors and multiples, since a factor can also be referred to as a number that can be divided by a given number exactly that certain times and leave no remainder. A factor can only be whole numbers and positive integers, starting from 1. Since division by 0 is undefined, 0 cannot be a factor of any number same as fractions and decimals they cannot be a factor of any number. I personally refer to a product of factors as an aftermath expression because its outcomes resulted from the effect of certain number. A factor of a whole number is a smaller whole number that can be multiplied with another whole number to produce a desired number.

Multiples refers to numbers that we get when we multiply one whole number by another whole number. In simple words, multiples are numbers that we get when a pair of factor numbers are multiplied together. Every number is a multiple of itself thus a multiple of a number is either equal to or greater than that number. For example, the multiples of 4 are 4,8,12,16 etc. In this case 4 is equal to its multiple 4 and the other multiples are greater than it. A number can have infinite multiples, but it can only have finite factors.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FACTORS AND MULTIPLES.

Factors and multiples are interconnected concepts, but they have a slight difference. Factors are the numbers that are multiplied together to reach a multiple or numbers that are divided by a certain number the exact number of times and leave no remainder. And a multiple is a product of factors that are multiplied together which means to end up with multiples of a given number we need factor numbers that can be multiplied together. We cannot have multiples without factors, factors have an influence on the multiples and brings about the results. For example, to get the desired number 24, factors of 24 are 8 and 3. Another factor of 24 is 1 because 1 times 24 is equal to 24. And on this case 24 is a multiple of 24. Another example of factors is 2 and 12 of the number 24. These two numbers can be multiplied together to equal the number 24, therefore, there are factors of 24.
